MISTAKE #1: THINKING THAT MOBILE IS BE ALL END ALL

Don’t get us wrong–mobile Botox services are a great way to start. But there’s a reason many Medspa’s do not offer concierge services. Not only do you waste tons of precious time driving around, but mobile-only services can limit your growth. At the end of the day, you’re providing a medical service, which means that it needs to be done cleanly. You need an environment that speaks to your professionalism, which means you need a physical, brick-and-mortar location. You can lease until you’re able to own if you have to.

MISTAKE #2: NOT TAKING COMPLIANCE SERIOUSLY

We’ve seen way too many people jump in before they have a full understanding of what they need to be doing from a compliance standpoint. You need to know your state-specific rules and regulations, you need to know if you need a medical director vs. a medical collaborator, and you need to get everything in writing. You need to know the rules. Patient care is on the line. And so is your license.

Psst–want help understanding how to navigate your state-specific regulations? We’ve got a blog for that.

MISTAKE #3: GOING INTO BUSINESS WITH YOUR BESTIE

You love your bestie! And we love that for you. But you need to think long and hard about whether or not they will be a beneficial partner to you in your business. You need to partner with someone who compliments your skill set vs. having the same one. You can still collaborate with them, perhaps as a contractor employee, or even share resources and tools, but be warned–going into business with your bestie does not always end well.

Our tip if you decide to do it? Each of you need to have your own attorney. And those attorneys need to write up paperwork with clear instructions on how to dissolve the business, if you need to. Better safe than sorry.

MISTAKE #4: BUYING EQUIPMENT TOO EARLY IN THE GAME

Investing in equipment before you’re financially ready can sink your business. You can have a lucrative practice with Botox-only. Yeah, laser beams are amazing. And it’s easy to think that “if you buy it, they will come”. But that’s not how it works. There is no piece of equipment that has enough demand to fill your practice. Your business needs to be built on foundational products like Botox, not the one-trick-pony devices. If you have 50 clients, you don’t need a $250k piece of equipment. Period.

Psst–not sure if you’re ready to invest in equipment? We’ve got a blog that can help you do the math.

MISTAKE #5: INVESTING IN ADVERTISING TOO SOON

You’re an injector. Marketing is likely not your strong suit. So hear us out–we’re not saying you shouldn’t invest in advertising. We’re saying you need to be strategic with when you do.

Don’t invest in any advertisements–Facebook, Instagram, etc.–until you have a strong website with an option for clients to book their services online. And social proof is important–make the most of your free resources–you can create your own Google My Business and run your own social media in the beginning for free.

Don’t pay to push people to nowhere. Pay for a FANTASTIC website. Pay for someone to optimize your site’s SEO. And if you don’t know what that stands for, you should definitely be taking our advice on this one.

MISTAKE #6: NOT DOING YOUR DUE DILIGENCE BEFORE TRAINING

You want to begin with the end in mind. There’s a shortage of quality injectors and room for so many people to have so much success. But success looks different for everyone. And you need to know what you can realistically take on before you invest thousands in a training course.

Maybe your success is just providing concierge services to make that extra vacation money. Or maybe your success is being able to quit your full-time job and open a practice of your own. Both are possible, but they require different amounts of time, money, and energy. Know which you want to be, and which you have the commitment to be, before you start spending your hard-earned cash. The juice is worth the squeeze, but you shouldn’t invest in training if you’re not ready to do the work.
